MARK HORWITZ: I practice criminal defense. That is defending those who are charged with or under investigation for criminal conduct and related civil litigation.
My clients' concerns when they come to me, first of all, of course, is their liberty. That is not going to jail. But also is the stigma of being under criminal investigation or facing criminal charges.
My role as a criminal defense lawyer is to defend my client and preserve their liberty. When an individual faces the might of the federal or state government and that, that entity is seeking to take away their, their liberty and put them in prison; it is an experience which many people have no comprehension of.
A client that I represented who was under investigation for many years and charged with a complex fraud case, when it was finally over and he was free and not convicted he said to me, you know, there are two great defenders of liberty in this country, the U.S. Marines and criminal defense lawyers.
I think the qualities that make a good criminal defense lawyer are number one, tenacity; number two, thoroughness; and number three, experience; and number four, logic. Those are the qualities that I and my firm bring to a case.
